He grew up in Zaragoza, a small village in Northern Philippines. Ilocano by heritage — and in Manila, when two Ilocanos meet, there are fireworks. His family was traditional. There were no paintbrushes.
In 2020, he arrived in Sydney with his Canadian-Australian partner. The world had shut down. He picked up a brush for the first time. Within six months he had his first commission. Within a year, collectors in Sydney's The Rocks community had taken notice.
Now based in Salcedo Village, Makati, he completed his training under a cum laude fine arts graduate of the University of Santo Tomas at Global Art, Bel-Air. In 2026 he began working in oil, and started framing his own canvases. The work is getting stronger. The palette bolder. The canvases larger.
He works in phases. Flowers for a while, then faces, then animals. The faces are mostly covered. A hat, a hand, a leaf across the eyes. He didn’t plan it and he hasn’t stopped.
He is painting animals now. Eight canvases are waiting, all the same size. Carabao, heron, rooster. They look back.
His paintings have sold to private collectors in Australia and the Philippines. A feature in Village Pipol Magazine is forthcoming.
His journey is one to attend.
His surname, Bareño, is carried by fewer than 400 people in the Philippines. His father's family is from Zamboanga — the last Spanish stronghold in the archipelago. The rest is speculation. And probably interesting.
At malamang, kawili-wili.
Reyden takes on a small number of commissions each year. Each one found its home. The first, Cosmic, was painted six months after his first brushstroke and went to Australia.
A commission is a conversation. It begins with what you have in mind and ends with something painted for you and no one else.
Originals. No prints. No multiples.
